Languages Remarks
  • The student must be able to communicate in at least one of the following languages in order to be accepted:
    • Spanish
    • English
  • Communication with patients will be in Spanish.
  • Availability to receive english speaking student per city varies throughout the year. Please note, Chile is a Spanish speaking country and clinical practice will be solely in this language. The student may only be able to talk in English with their tutor and other exchange students/Chilean medical students. Please do not expect that the rotation will be in English or that many patients will be able to communicate in this language. Even if we can accept english speaking students, we strongly suggest to take a Spanish course before coming to the country (the more extensive the course, the better).
  • The student should state their knowledge of English and Spanish in their Application Form using the following scale: Native/Excellent/Good/Fair/Unknown. Other languages are not required. If the student does not have the level of language stated on the Application Form, the exchange will be cancelled.
Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.
Required level of studies
  • We only receive students that has passed their 3rd year of medical studies.
  • In order to be accepted in a department, the student must have the subject as Approved in his/her Students Record, or state in the AF that the subject will be approved at the beggining of the exchange. 
  • If the student doesn't have approved the subject by the exchange date, the exchange will be cancelled.
Graduated students allowed

Even if accepted by the hosting country, students must be still enrolled in university by the time the Application Form is sent.

Academic Quality
  • The student has to bring their own logbook to register their attendance to the hospital.
Special Remarks
  • IFMSA exchanges in Chile are observational and the student will be guided everyday by a tutor from the department. The tutor may vary from day to day or remain the same for the whole rotation. All exchange students will partake in the same academic activity as the other Chilean interns/medical students passing in that department. If the student needs to obtain specific practical skills (stipulated by their University) it can be arranged, but it must be notified after sending the AF.
  • 90% attendance is mandatory in order to complete the rotation and receive the Certificate. Therefore, attendance for 18 weekdays in the 4-week rotation is necessary. The student is permitted to be absent for 2 days, but they have to inform the department and LEO in advance, which is mandatory in order to get your certificate. More absent days cannot be replaced by night shifts, more working hours or weekends.
  • The certificate will be issued on the last week of the rotation and will include 26 days, from the Monday of the first week to the Friday of the final week (4 full weeks). A 30 day certificate can be awarded upon request if it is stated on the student's Application Form (based on academic/scholarships reasons), but the rotation will last 30 days  (ending Tuesday of the fifth week).
  • White coat is mandatory to enter to the Hospital. The student must bring their own in order to enter.
  • If the student is accepted in a surgical department (As general surgery, traumatology, etc), we strongly recommed to bring his/her own scrub.
Cities Remarks

  • Spanish proficiency is mandatory in order to be accepted in La Serena, San Felipe, Valparaiso, Santiago de Chile or Concepcion.
    • Santiago de Chile - Pontificia Universidad Catolica: you need an spanish language certificate to be accepted
    • Temuco - Universidad Mayor: you need a basic-intermediate level of spanish to be accepted 
  • A few "cities" actually refer to metropolitan areas. The student cannot apply to a specific town within a metropolitan area, however they are close to each other. Those "cities" are:
    • La Serena
    • Valparaiso
    • Santiago de Chile
    • Concepcion  
  • IMPORTANT: The available cities are distributed in 3 differents groups, of which the student will be able to select a maximum of 1 city in Group 1 and at least 1 city in Group 3.
    • Group 1: Santiago de Chile, Valparaiso, Concepcion
    • Group 2: La Serena, Temuco, Puerto Montt, Valdivia, Antofagasta 
    • Group 3: Osorno, San Felipe, Curico, Linares, Talca, Chillan
  • For example: The student can apply to Santiago de Chile (Group 1), Temuco (Group 2) and then a Group 3 city. Another example: Puerto Montt and Temuco (both Group 2) and then a Group 3 city. You cannot choose 2 "Group 1" cities or 1 "Group 1" city and 2 "Group 2" cities in the same AF (If the student does this, the AF will be returned).
  • The student must apply to 3 different cities, otherwise the Application Form will be returned. We will try to accommodate every student's preference but the student should not expect to be allocated to their first choice.
  • During some periods such as peak months (January, July & August) or others there is a chance that city preferences cannot be met due to the amount of students. Please consider that Santiago de Chile, Valparaiso and Concepcion are in the highest demand.
Calendar Remarks
  • All exchanges last 4 weeks, from the first Monday of every month to the 4th Friday.
  • City availability might change from month to month and it is not a guarantee what we stated above.
  • We only accept calendar month rotations (starting on the first Monday of each month) without exceptions. Any other AF that present an initial date different from the first Monday of the month, will be returned.

Disciplines Remarks
  • In order to be accepted into a hospital department, the student must have passed the relevant subjects and evidence needs to be provided in the "Student's Record" document (which needs to be an official document, signed and/or stamped by the student’s University).
  • There are a few scenarios where evidence in the "Student's Record" is not necessary, which include:
    • If in the students' University/Medical School the specific department is part of a larger subject and hence is not covered separately (for example "Internal Medicine" covers Hematology or Cardiology and therefore the student is eligible to apply for either if they have evidence to prove they completed Internal Medicine)
    • If they are studying the subject currently and therefore expect to have finished this topic by the time the exchange commences.
    • In these cases, the student must provide an explanation in the "Curriculum Vitae" document. Without this, the Application Form will be returned to the student to be completed fully.
  • If the student applies to a department that is not covered in their medical school (e.g. nuclear medicine or immunology), the student must have fully completed their medical training (have the same level of training as a Chilean Intern) in order to be accepted.
  • The host specialty department will expect you to have the appropriate basic knowledge in the field. If the student doesn't have sufficient knowledge for their chosen subject, the exchange will be cancelled.
  • If the students doesn't have completed any clinical fields, they won't be elegible to be placed in a hospital and the exchange will cancelled.
  • IMPORTANT: The student will only be able to apply to a maximum of 2 different surgical specialties (General Surgery and subspecialties) and 3 different internal medicine specialties (General Internal Medicine and subspecialties).
COVID-19 circumstances: 

Due to covid-19 circumstances, the capacity of our hospitals has changed. According to this, there is the possibility that you will have to carry out your exchange in more than one hospital but with the same tutor. These establishments will be nearby so that transportation is not an inconvenience for the student.

Social Program


  • Social programs are arranged by the Local and National Committee. Activities usually take place on weekends.
  • Each student has to pay for every activity.
  • As a general rule, a social program will be offered with at least 3 other incoming students within each city.
  • Special social programmes are arranged during our winter months: June, July and August (especially with the ski centers) and summer months: December, January and February.

  • NATIONAL SOCIAL PROGRAM: we offer a NSP in the months of July-August-January, which will take place according to the availability of our LCs, so we will notice you in advance of this program. 


  • Boarding (food): One meal per working day (breakfast) will be guaranteed by the host family (according to the SCOPE regulations), but usually 2 everyday are provided (breakfast and dinner). The student has to pay any other food-related expenses. Please note that special dietary requirements (for example vegetarian, vegan or other) may not be accommodated by the host family and the student may have to buy supplementary food.
    *In the case the student is accomodated in a student's hostel or others where food is not covered, IFMSA-Chile will provide 2.000 CLP per working day to the student.
  • Lodging (accommodation): The student will live with a Host Family or a Chilean student. The student may arrive to their host family the weekend before the start of the exchange (according to the Card of Acceptance) and leave the weekend of the last week of exchange.

Payment details for unilateral fee
  • The rotation, accommodation and food are free for those students who partake a bilateral exchange (the student is likely to have already paid their sending organization). If the student comes via an unilateral exchange (minority of our incomings) they must pay a "unilateral fee" of 240,000 Chilean Pesos (CLP) (about 300 Euros). This fee has to be paid in Chilean Pesos directly to IFMSA-Chile, following the procedure document that will be given by the NEO-In through email, during the first three days of the exchange, otherwise the exchange will be canceled. We do not accept Euros, US Dollars or any other currency.
  • Unilateral fee must be fully paid even if the student doesn’t use the accommodation/food we offer or does not participate in the social program.
  • If you are in doubt, please ask your NEO if you are partaking in a bilateral or unilateral exchange.
Visa requirements
  • Many of students from different countries do not need a Visa to get in Chile. However, the student must check their visa requirements using the following link: Visa Policy of Chile. If it is necessary, the student should apply for a TOURIST Visa (student, resident or working Visa is not needed/accepted).
  • If the student's country does not have a Chilean Diplomatic Mission (embassy/consulate-general), then it will be necessary obtain a visa from the nearest country with an embassy (via travel or sending their documents). Special Remarks
  • The student has to complete their own Application Form (AF) and upload the "Mandatory documents" into the Card of Documents (CoD). Both steps can be done on
  • Please send the AF as soon as possible, even if the CoD is not completed (CoD will always be available to update) -The deadline to send the AF and upload all mandatory documents in the CoD is 20 weeks (5 months) before the start of the exchange. Failure to do so will result in the return of the AF.

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
  • All incoming students must have been immunized against Hepatitis B. If you were vaccinated when child, you must have the reinforce doses up-to-date
  • Flu vaccination must be required, especially when arriving in winter season (May to August) or coming from winter.

  • Health Insurance: Health Care is not free in Chile. Please make sure you purchase an International Health Insurance which covers expenses in Chile and enquire about the conditions before you arrive in Chile.
  • Travel Insurance: As NMO we do not ask for this insurance, however the exchangee could get that type of insurance.
  • Liability Insurance: As NMO we do not ask for this insurance, however the exchangee could get that type of insurance.
  • Malpractice Insurance: As NMO we do not ask for this insurance, but the exchange student is nevertheless insured through the University that is bound to the hospital as long as the exchange remain observational.

20 Weeks

Special remarks

In order to complete their application form the student must upload all the documents stated below in the Card of Documents, please note that only digitalized documents may be uploaded and they must be in English or Spanish.

01. Curriculum Vitae. This must include personal details, education, clinical experience, certifications, achievements, skills, hobbies and languages. We also need to be mentioned details of the subjects the student is currently undertaking or has passed in Medical School (proved in the "Student's Record").
02. Copy of Passport. A photocopy of the page which displays the student's personal details is needed. All students need to upload their passport, except the students from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, those students may upload their national identity document instead.
03. Photo of the student. In order to process the students details, the Medical School require a photo. It must show the full face, be forward facing, looking straight at the camera, eyes open and have a white background (similar to a passport photo). Please use formal or semi-formal clothes, but you must be fully dressed. 
04. Proof of Medical School Enrolment. A document to prove the student is enrolled in a Medical School is required and must be signed and stamped by the University/Medical School of origin.
05. Student's Record (Subjects passed). A document listing the courses the student has completed is necessary and must be signed and stamped by the University/Medical School of origin. The student must have approved the clerkships he/she is applying for by the time of the exchange.
06. Vaccination Card/Immunization Record. A document to prove that the student has been vaccinated against Hepatitis B (the three doses are required). 
NOTE: Some University Hospitals might also require Influenza inmunization and Chickenpox inmunization/self-report of having the disease during the childhood.

08. Motivation Letters (4). A one page long document in English/Spanish stating the student’s interest in each department.

The student must respect our document requirements stated above in order to be accepted. Some universities may need extra documents or a special application form. The NEO or LEO will contact you. Please send those documents as soon as they are requested.

COVID-19 circumstances: 
Health insurance must include COVID-19 coverage. We will only accept students who are vaccinated, and must send their COVID-19 vaccination card along with their AF. If the student had COVID-19 disease, must have an IgG antibody test done before travelling. If that is not the case, a negative PCR test is required. Both of them must be done a maximum of 72 hours prior to arrival in our country and must be sent to the LEO so we can check it out before the arrival of the student. We do not accept students with positive PCR tests.

  • Please respect the deadline (8 weeks or 56 days in advance). We know flight tickets increase their cost according each day pass, but it is not possible for us to make the process faster.
  • Please pay attention that most of our Card of Acceptance warn that the hospital/department might change. This situation depends on the host University and not on the IFMSA members related to the exchange.

  • After the deadline and with no request of substitution, the exchange will be cancelled.

  • 8 weeks (56 days) in advance and before the Card of Acceptance is received.
  • After the deadline the AF will be considered "used" and it won't be send back, so the sending NMO cannot re-asign the exchange unit again for another period (to the same or different student)

  • The substitution has to have passed the same or more core courses than the previous student
  • We don't mind the gender, age o any other detail of the substitution beside of the academic aspect

Special remarks
  • It is possible to request to be placed in the same city with other students (maximum of 2 students can be requested on the Application. Form). However we cannot guarantee that the students will be place in the same hospital, department or host family.
  • Change of Host Family is not allowed, please don't insist, unless there is really good reason.
  • If IFMSA-Chile receives complaints from the Hospital, the University, the host family or IFMSA-Chile members, the clerkship will be cancelled.
  • Whilst some host students may be able to meet their incoming student on arrival, it cannot be expected that IFMSA-Chile members will pick up incoming students at the airport or bus terminals, even if it is asked in the Card of Confirmation. Please remember that we are also Medical students, and run this exchange program in our spare time and free of charge (as in any other country) and therefore cannot act as a travel agency.
  • In some exceptional situations we are forced to change the host city/University in the very last minute, mostly due to University issues, student's strikes, etc. In this cases we will do everything in our reach to re-allocate the student, but it is not  guarantee that we will be able to respect was stated in the original Card of Acceptance (such as host department, type of accommodation, etc).

COVID-19 circumstances: 

Due to the recommendations of our ministry of health, accepted applicants shall arrive 10 days prior to the beginning of the rotation for preventive quarantine where the accommodation must be paid by the student. 

Also, we will ask you a negative PCR test that must be done 48 hours before starting the clinical internship, and has to be be paid by the student.
