Languages Remarks
Switzerland has four official languages (none of it is English) and we are hosting incomings in three different language regions:
The LCs are as follows: French - LC Fribourg, LC Geneva and LC Lausanne
German - LC Basel, LC Bern and LC Zurich
Italian - LC Lugano

Note that your documents have to be written in each language respectively. If you are applying for different regions you also need to provide language certificates, motivation letters and the CV in each language.

Special remark: The student has to be able to speak fluently with the patient.
Official language certificate stating a level of completed B2 or higher of the CEFR or equivalent is needed (if doubtful, there would be an interview by skype).
If the student does not speak the required language or does not reach the required level, the AF will be returned (unless another agreement was made with the NEO).

Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.
Required level of studies
5th and 6th year students = 3rd and 4th year of clinical studies (second last and last year of studies)

LC Geneva with special requirements:
For the following departments, the university hospital of Geneva only accepts students in their last year of studies:
  • surgery departments
  • emergency department
Graduated students allowed
No

Even if accepted by the hosting country, students must be still enrolled in university by the time the Application Form is sent.
Clerkship Duration
4 weeks, 9 hours a day, 5 days per week
Dress code
Casual
What to Bring
- Stethoscope
- Lamp
- Reflex Hammer
Academic Quality
The students are seen as equal to the Swiss students doing their clinical year, this means that they are expected to take histories, do examinations and assist in surgeries if needed. The student is excepted to work and gain a lot of practical experience in order to get more autonomous in the medical practice.

Nightshifts
No
Special Remarks
  • The working conditions vary from hospital to hospital and will be determined at the beginning of the clerkship.
  • A normal shift is 9 hours.
  • Depending on the deparment, night shifts are possible, but not usual.
  • Be punctual at all times, being late is very frowned upon in Switzerland
  • Unfortunately the dress code of the hospital in Geneva does not allow students with patient contact to wear any kind of headgear (e.g.hijab)
  • The clerkship in Switzerland is very practical and very little oberservatory. The student will have to work. It is not possible to not praticipate in practical clinical work. If the student refuses, the exchange will be terminated immediately and lodging and boarding will be cancelled.

Cities Remarks
Please choose 3 different LCs:
French speaking LCs: Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne
German speaking LCs: Basel, Bern, Zurich
Italian speaking LC: Lugano

Please send your AF as soon as possible, because we work with "first come, frist serve".
Especially the French speaking part of Switzerland is full very fast during the summer months, so please be aware of our limits.

If according to your language skills an exchange is only possible in the LC Lugano please mention that in your application under the section "notes".
Calendar Remarks
Clerkships start on the 1st monday of the month and end on the last friday of the month.

During the months of July, August and September, clerkships are hard to organise so there is a chance that nothing can be found.
In this case, the clerkship will be postponed. Please state in your AF if you can come during any other month.

Please note that due to exam season in June & January the availability of our local students for social program might be restricted.

Please add a remark on the AF, if the student is from a non-EU-country.
Student from non-EU-countries coming to Switzerland, exept for LC Geneva, will need a Type C or D working permit (short term stay) and will have to get it in their country's Swiss Embassy, after contacting your CP in Switzerland. The student must wait for the CPs or LEOs confirmation before applying for the working VISA.

LC Geneva don't need a type D working permit, a tourist VISA is enough.

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
We require vaccine proof for HBV, Tetanos, Diphteria, BCG and COVID-19. If you are not vaccinated with BCG, a tuberculine test will be asked for upon arrival.

Insurance
The NMO requires:

Travel insurance:
This insurance will cover you if problems appear during your travel such as medical emergency, trip interruption or cancellation, lost or stolen baggage or travel documents, and default protection.

Health insurance:
It covers expenses linked to health issues (e.g. if you have to see a doctor and buy drugs on prescription).

Liability insurance:
It covers expenses related to damages you can cause to objects or people outside from your professional duties.

All these insurances should be aquired prior to the exchange and in your home country.

The NMO will not cover any damage done by the student during the exchange.

Please upload this document in the section "other" when sending the AF at least 6 months prior to the exchange.

Finances:
swimsa receives financial support in a form of a "salary" from the hospitals for each student swimsa is hosting. The financial support is used to organize boarding and lodging for the incomings. The students are therefore asked to sign a "salary waiver" form.
If the LEO does not receive the signed form via e mail at least 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the clerkship, the exchange will be cancelled!

Special remarks

COVID requirements:

Incoming students agree to observe and obey all rules and warnings regarding COVID-19 posted by the Swiss government.

Before travelling to Switzerland consult the FOPH list of high-risk countries and the current safety measures.

80% attendance of the working days will be required in order to receive a certificate. To guarantee this quota we highly suggest our incomings to please plan an early arrival in advance. A prolongation of the exchange is not possible.

Any additional costs that may arise (e.g. accommodation during quarantine, PCR test) must be covered entirely by the student.

Recommendations:

  • We strongly urge our incomings to respect all measures as anyone who fails to comply with the quarantine requirement is committing an offence and can be punished by a fine of up to CHF 10,000.

  • We recommend buying a reimbursable plane ticket in case of unfortunate cancellation.
